Algorithms and programming foundations

Algorithmic thinking is the skill that outlives languages. It teaches you to break a problem down, choose a data structure and weigh the cost of a solution before writing it. Everything else in development rests on this base.

Reasoning comes before the language

A developer stands out less by the language they write than by the way they frame the problem. Choosing between a list and a lookup table, measuring what a nested loop costs across ten thousand rows, splitting a function so it fits in one head: these acts transfer unchanged from one language to another. IHETC teaches them first, because they decide how a piece of software holds up over five years far more than the choice of a fashionable library.

  • Turn a business need into an executable specification, step by step
  • Choose the data structure that makes a process fast and readable
  • Estimate the cost of an algorithm before writing it, then measure it
  • Split a program into testable, reusable functions

What the catalogue devotes to it

You design, write and justify an algorithm for an unfamiliar business problem, and defend its cost to a peer. Figures computed from the blocks listed above, on every build of the site.
