Deliverable: what changes hands on a date
A deliverable is a tangible result handed to the client: document, mockup, application, report. It has a name, a date, a recipient and an acceptance criterion. A plan made of deliverables can be checked; a plan made of tasks can only be told.
A result, handed over and accepted
A deliverable is what the project hands over, as opposed to what it does. A task consumes time; a deliverable produces an object that changes hands and that someone accepts. It therefore carries four attributes: a title, a date, a recipient and an acceptance criterion. A project plan whose lines are tasks steers poorly; a plan whose lines are deliverables can be checked.
- A title, a date, a recipient, an acceptance criterion
- A task consumes time, a deliverable produces an object
- A plan made of deliverables can be checked line by line
What separates a deliverable from a task
The Project Management certification has candidates produce the real deliverables of a file: framing note, milestone plan, tracking table, closing report. The Website Creation course delivers three live sites, each accepted against criteria set before work began.
