Health, safety and environment supervisor
The HSE supervisor oversees a zone, a team and outside contractors. They prepare risk assessments before work starts, arbitrate in the field, run post-event investigations and report to management with facts.
Supervising safety across a zone
Preparation comes first: analysing planned work, approving method statements, holding the kick-off meeting with contractors. The field comes second, and it is the most demanding — arbitrating, stopping an operation when conditions change, explaining the decision. The third is writing: post-event investigation, monthly indicators, an action plan followed through to closure. It is the last that gives the function its weight in front of an executive team.

What experience is needed before this level?
Field practice in HSE or a technical trade is expected, because the function assumes talking on equal terms with operations. The HSE officer qualification, at level 4, is the preceding step and combines perfectly with two years on site.
Does the function cover environment?
It covers it fully: waste management, discharges, hazardous product storage, emergency situations. On permitted sites it is even the part that calls for the most regular dialogue with state services.
