Systems and network administrator
Servers, virtualisation, directory, backups, network, security: the administrator holds the infrastructure everything else rests on. A role of responsibility, where good work is measured by the silence of production.
Keeping an infrastructure standing
Part of the job is planned: applying patches, running a restore test, reviewing rights, documenting an architecture. The other part answers the unexpected — a failing disk, a link that drops, a saturated service — and it is the preparation of the first that makes the second bearable. Monitoring plays the central role: it turns an endured outage into an anticipated alert, provided someone took the time to configure it properly.
- Install, harden and maintain a production server
- Administer a directory, rights and a password policy
- Design a backup strategy and test it by restoring
- Monitor, alert and document a complete architecture
Who entrusts their infrastructure
- Banks, insurers and microfinance institutions
- Telecom operators and internet service providers
- Mining and industrial groups with multiple sites
- Managed service providers and regional hosting companies
- Administrations, hospitals and education institutions
The figures to keep in mind before deciding
A candidate compares four things first: duration, taught hours, credits and target level. Here they are, in the order that matters. Level sets the responsibility the qualification recognises; hours state the real work asked of you; credits make comparison possible with any other programme, here or elsewhere in the region.

The validated skills, one by one
Each block matches a capability the role demands and the assessment verifies. The breakdown comes from the filed framework: it describes an occupation as it is practised, not a subject as it is taught. A block once obtained stays obtained, which makes the path resumable if working life calls for a pause.

Building an administrator profile
Here are the paths open to this occupation, with their real cost and duration. A long programme installs the full base; a certificate targets a precise function and can be taken while keeping your job. Both strategies work, and the table gives what you need to choose between them.
| Programme | Duration | Credits | Taught hours | Fees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Networks and Cloud · Bachelor's degree | 2 years | 120 | 1200 h | 5 600 000 GNF per year |
| Cybersecurity programme — Bac+5 level · Master's degree | 2 years | 120 | 1200 h | 7 500 000 GNF per year |
Useful to know before you apply
Do I need cloud knowledge?
The networks and cloud programme treats it as a natural extension of infrastructure: the same principles of availability, backup and access control, applied to rented resources. Both models coexist in most organisations in the region.
How do I move towards security?
The cybersecurity programme extends this base directly, and the chief information security officer qualification, at level 7, is its culmination. An experienced administrator is the best possible candidate for that move, because they already know what needs protecting.
Is on-call part of the role?
It is, in organisations whose service runs continuously, and it is organised: rotation, escalation procedure, compensation. Well-configured monitoring strongly reduces its frequency, which explains the care the framework devotes to it.
