Risk assessment: identify, rate, decide
Risk assessment lists the hazardous situations of an activity, rates them by severity and likelihood, then leads to ranked measures. It is the base of any prevention approach. It is updated at every change of installation or organisation.
From observed hazard to decided measure
Risk assessment starts from the real activity: who does what, with what, under which conditions. Each hazardous situation is described, then rated by the severity of the possible harm and the likelihood of occurrence. The rating ranks, it does not decide alone: it points to measures in order, from eliminating the hazard through to personal protection.

The hierarchy of prevention measures
The Industrial Site Safety certificate has candidates run a full assessment on a simulated workshop, through to a dated action plan. The Health, Safety and Environment programme sets it over time: updating the register, incorporating field reports and following up the measures committed.
