Lockout: making an installation safe before working on it
Lockout puts an installation out of energy and keeps it that way throughout the intervention. It follows a strict sequence and is verified before every action on the equipment. Isolate, lock, dissipate, verify, mark: five moves, in that order.
A sequence, with no step skipped
Lockout guarantees that an installation cannot restart during an intervention. It chains five moves: isolate the energy source, lock the isolating device with a secured mechanism, dissipate residual energy, verify that energy is genuinely absent, then mark the equipment. Each move leaves a named trace, and restoration follows the reverse sequence.

The five moves of lockout
The Industrial Maintenance and Energy programme has candidates run the full sequence on simulated installations, through to restoration and the return-to-service test. The Industrial Site Safety certificate covers it from the issuing side: verifying lockout before authorising an intervention.

1 — Isolate
The installation is cut from every energy source: electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, thermal.

2 — Lock
The isolating device is locked by a named mechanism only the worker can remove.

3 — Dissipate
Residual energies are released: capacitors discharged, pressure bled, masses secured.

4 — Verify and mark
Absence of energy is confirmed on site, then the installation is marked as locked out.
