Administering a Linux system
Linux runs servers, network appliances and virtually every cloud service. Administering it from the command line means holding the layer that applications, databases and models all rest on.
The layer everything else assumes
A production incident is almost always resolved in the same place: in the system logs, at the command line. Reading a log, tracing a process, understanding an access right and writing the script that will automate the task tomorrow — that is what separates an operator from a user. Teaching starts from everyday administration — accounts, services, backups — and goes through to hardening an exposed server, because both are practised on the same console.

Do I need prior Linux experience for these blocks?
Systems administration starts from installation and the command line. The support technician qualification is set at level 4, that of a skilled employee.
Is the coursework done on real machines?
On individual virtual machines with full administrator access: you break things, you fix them, you start again. It is the only mode of learning that works for this skill.
Is this skill useful in cybersecurity?
It is the real prerequisite. The cybersecurity programme devotes 220 taught hours to network and systems security, which assumes command of the console.
