Becoming a site hse officer
They keep prevention alive day to day: safety talks, work permits, near-miss analysis, record-keeping. The role is less technical than imagined and far more documentary: what is not recorded does not exist on inspection day.

What the market says
It is the role best covered by our base — 140 Industry and HSE modules — and the first need voiced by Guinea's mining sector, its subcontractors and construction. It is the only ground where we already hold real depth rather than an intention.
The sequence
Each step assumes the previous one. Taking them out of order is possible, and it is the most common way to lose time.
- 01
Risk fundamentals
Identify, rate, prioritise. Without this framework, the rest is regulatory window dressing. — about 25 hours of work.
- 02
Site-specific risks
Electrical, height, chemical, confined space, fire. You go deep on the real site's risks, not all five. — about 40 hours of work.
- 03
Leading without line authority
Convincing a foreman to stop an operation is the hardest skill in the job, and the least taught. — about 20 hours of work.
- 04
Records, indicators and audit
Building a record that stands up to an external auditor, and indicators that support decisions rather than reassurance. — about 25 hours of work.
By the end, you will be able to
- Run a risk assessment on a real workstation and document it
- Draft and enforce a work permit
- Deliver a safety talk that changes a behaviour
- Keep a register presentable as is to an external auditor
- Handle a near-miss through to a verified corrective action
What this path does not give you
This path issues no authorisation: that rests with the employer, after a fitness assessment and, where required, a medical examination. Nor does it replace field experience, which remains the entry condition for most roles.
Questions about this path
Can I enter without industrial experience?
The path is open, the job less so: most employers expect some field exposure, however brief. The path then has real value alongside an operator role, enabling an internal move — which is the most common route into this job.
Does this path count as a regulatory authorisation?
No, and the two must not be confused. An authorisation is issued by the employer or an approved body, on the basis of fitness observed on the job and on site. This path gives the competence it assumes and the record of what was completed; it replaces neither the medical check, nor the on-the-job assessment, nor the employer's decision.
